Curatorial Rationale

Cryptomania

My artwork was influenced by the topic of cryptocurrencies and the current obsession behind it. A cryptocurrency is in simple terms a form of peer-to-peer digital cash not requiring a middleman e.g., a bank for transfer. Cryptocurrencies operate on a network called the blockchain. Imagine a blockchain as an accounting ledger that is distributed across multiple computers around the world and synchronises on all computers after transactions occur. It is very difficult to hack.

Many cryptocurrencies were born to challenge the old structures of the corrupt financial system lead by banks, governments and insurance companies around the world. In fact, the first cryptocurrency called Bitcoin was born as a type of protest against all the bail outs of companies that were paid with taxes during the crisis of 2008. Meanwhile, they created a parallel financial universe that tries to get a market share from the standard financial sector. As a cryptocurrency admirer myself, I decided to set some arguments out through my own artwork illustrating why crypto maniacs are obsessed with cryptocurrencies. My work was inspired by Mike Winkelmann who predominantly produces digital art work in the form of NFTs (non-fungible tokens) about the cryptocurrency space. What inspired me the most is his modern approach to surrealism inspired by Dali, the use of bright colours and the artists concepts which gives his work a vivid aura, especially in the artwork “Bull Run” that underlines the crypto hype.

In order to create a visual connection between all my projects, I equipped every one of them with at least one cryptocurrency logo (Bitcoin, Dash etc.). Across the art works, I focused primarily on the concepts, so as the usage of lines, forms and shapes as my work is heavily intentional. For instance, I used circles and spheres that reiterate network nodes and coins as well as lines that allude to my simplistic approach to the topic.

The colours of yellow, gold and orange that appear more or less in every of my projects representing the recent adoration of Bitcoin. As cryptocurrencies are digital and very abstract, I intend to provide clarity and transparency to crypto “rookies”, through the heavy use of symbols and objects. I hope that people now will understand why crypto maniacs are obsessed by the topic through my heavily conceptual artwork.

Cryptocurrency is here to stay and allows innovative opportunities, especially for the unbanked people e.g., refugees in Africa.
